A Journey of Forgiveness
By Jacklyn | June 15, 2014
“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” ~ Lewis B. Smedes
One of the secrets to happiness, peace of mind and good health is being able to free our minds of any anger, hatred or resentment towards others. While it is only human to feel angry and resentment towards those who have wronged you, it takes a true winner to be able to understand and forgive.
Recently, I have my fair share of people who have intimidated, humiliated, betrayed and wronged me. I was hurt and it took me a month’s journey to face the world again..
I would like to share a talk by Ellen Rutledge whose son was brutally murdered but chose to forgive her son’s killers… If she can learn to forgive the unforgivable, we can certainly learn to forgive the petty arguments or misunderstandings we have with our friends, family and colleagues. Ellen was one of the inspirational speakers at TEDx Ironwood, standing onstage along with prisoners, performers, educators and administrators to tell her story of forgiveness. Ellen’s son was tragically murdered in 2008. She expanded on the power of forgiveness, and how it can bring freedom for both all parties. She now works at Ironwood State Prison, where their focus upon education and rehabilitation fits perfectly with Ellen’s own philosophy.
